Joe Fromaggio Ultimate Grille Cheese & Bistro Pub (www.joefromaggio.ca) has opened in Westmount Plaza (50 Westmount Rd. N. in Waterloo), in the former Filthy McNasty’s. Scott Henderson, co-CEO of Scallan Events, corporate partner in the 100-seat restaurant, says the menu includes lots of cheese dishes, including grilled cheese, mac n’ cheese, chicken parm and six-cheese lasagna. It’s open daily from 11:30 a.m. to midnight. Principal owner is Joseph Siahhou. Managing partner is Reuben Salonga. Kitchener-Waterloo-based Scallan Events, owned by Henderson and Allan Cayenne, is the corporate partner.

Yogurty’s

A Yogurty’s (www.yogurtys.com) frozen yogurt shop has opened in Uptown Waterloo at 15 King St. S., in the building that formerly housed the Rude Native restaurant. Mike Harris, a native of North Bay, Ont., is the owner of the Waterloo franchise. Yogurty’s, based in Markham, currently has 35 locations in Ontario.

New Dominion Bakery

The New Dominion Bakery in Kitchener (110 Victoria St. S.) has closed after more than 80 years in business. A note on the door thanks customers for their support over the years. The bakery, best known for its bread, opened in 1928 as Dominion Bakery. Michael Naciuk launched the business in the back of a store at Queen and Duke streets. Not long after, it moved to 114 Victoria St. S. The bakery was acquired in 1973 by Manuel DaSilva, Jose Ferreira and Alcindo Pacheco. Did you know?

A Pitaway restaurant has opened in downtown Kitchener at 2 Duke St. E., in the so-called Duke Street Food Block between Queen and Frederick streets. Among the items on Pitaway’s menu are shawarma, kebabs, falafel and grilled pita. The franchisee is Izzat Alsakani. The Matter of Taste (www.matteroftaste.ca) coffee bar in Uptown Waterloo has closed. The outlet opened in the Waterloo Town Square in 2008.
