Cambridge Turbos make ringette history

LEDUC, ALTA. — Sydney Nosal of St. Clements scored three goals and two assists as the Cambridge Turbos won their third consecutiv­e National Ringette League championsh­ip title with a 6-5 win over the Atlantic Attack of Moncton, N.B., in the gold-medal final of the Canadian ringette championsh­ip.

Paige Nosal chipped in with two goals and three assists as the Turbos became the first team in league history to win three straight championsh­ips. Sharolyn Wouters also scored for the Turbos, who outscored the Attack 3-1 in the fourth quarter. The teams were tied 3-3 at halftime.

“Twice they were up by two on us and it was totally a mental game for our team to pull ourselves together,” said Sydney Nosal.

“At halftime, we took our time, calmed down and came out and we knew that we would be able to battle and come back into the game.”

Paige Nosal was named to the tournament’s first-team all-star unit along with three members of the Waterloo Wildfire — Kelsey Youldon, defender Christiann­e Varty and goalie Emily Ferguson. Sheri Adams of Cambridge was a second-team selection on offence.

Waterloo earned bronze at the weeklong competitio­n.

Cambridge won silver in the under-16 division, falling 4-3 to New Brunswick in the final.

Emma Croswell of Cambridge was a first-team all-star on offence and teammate Kat Shaughness­y was a second-team selection on defence.
