Last year, when he knew the choir would be part of the Bible project, Vuorinen contacted O’Gorman, having no idea he had previously studied illuminated text and his wife, a singer, was a former member of the Grand Philharmonic Choir.
The coincidences were remarkable and made O’Gorman the perfect candidate for the job.
Vuorinen and his committee had chosen 100 of a possible 160 images in the Bible and gave them to O’Gorman.
“We tried not to be too literal” said Vuorinen. “It’s a little more metaphorical than whatever the choir is singing about.”
O’Gorman chose 10 of the 100 and did not alter the images. Rather, he animated parts — such as stars that now twinkle.
He wanted audience to “revel in the intricate detail” of the images.
“We wanted to create an ambient environment,” he said.
And to add yet another unique element to this presentation of “Messiah” — the entire concert will be live-streamed as a projection on Kitchener City Hall for free to the public.
Soloists include soprano Jacqueline Woodley, mezzo Marjorie Maltais, tenor Andrew Haji and baritone Russell Braun.
