Mummers, dancing, skating and fidget spinners this weekend
WATERLOO REGION — Get crafty at the Kitchener Public Library or celebrate the centuries-old English Twelfth Night of Christmas with a local folk society.
There’s a lot to do in the region this weekend, here’s the short list:
Attend a New Year’s levee. The City of Waterloo event will include free skating and swimming at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex, live entertainment, face painting, mad scientist performances, free cookies and refreshments and more. Kitchener’s carnival-themed levee is being hosted at city hall and will include games, skating on Carl Zehr Square, musical performances, and a door prize ticket draw. And in Cambridge, the levee is also being hosted at city hall with activities for the whole family.
Celebrate the Twelfth Day of Christmas with the Mill Race Folk Society. It’s a throwback to a long ago English tradition marking the end of Christmas festivities. The event will include English folk dancing by Orange Peel Morris and Forest City Morris & Sword, a traditional Cornish mummers’ play called St. George and the Dragon, and pub carols. Those who attend can wear costume or dress of their choice.
Join in on the fidget spinner fad. The Kitchener Public Library is hosting a workshop for all ages to learn to make fidget spinners using calipers and three-dimensional modelling software. This event is free.
The Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory is hosting a scavenger hunt all about bugs. Called Insects Go For Gold, children can visit stations where they have to find the world’s strongest and fastest bugs while unscrambling a puzzle. Those who manage to figure out the puzzle, receive a prize.
