Heritage event to celebrate local history
KITCHENER — They’re usually the unsung heroes of local heritage, but this weekend they’ll get some recognition.
The Waterloo Regional Heritage Foundation is hosting its first Discovering Heritage Event Saturday at the Waterloo Region Museum and Doon Heritage Village.
The event, which is open and free to the public, will include children’s activities and a celebration of the people making an impact in fields from heritage education to archeology to local archives.
“A lot of people spend a lot of time preserving our local heritage, but a lot of people don’t know this is happening,” said Darryl Bonk, one of event’s organizers.
The event, which runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., will include various activities for children intended to spark an interest in local history, including story reading, a Mother’s Day cardmaking workshop, Conestoga wagon exhibit, popular games from past decades and more.
Local heritage groups will also have exhibits in the great room of the museum, and the Waterloo Historical Society will feature its annual meeting and speakers, while handing out copies of its 104th historical volume.
