KITCHENER — Waterloo Regional Police say a man found dead on the weekend was killed by a gunshot.

Police are investigating the death of Shaun Yorke, 45, as a murder. Yorke was found inside his home on Elm Ridge Drive in the Forest Heights area of Kitchener at 1:20 a.m. on Sunday.

Insp. Mike Haffner said police received a 911 call from inside the townhouse. When they arrived, Yorke was dead.

Police say Yorke was the target of the killing.

Investigators are determining who was in the townhouse at the time and trying to speak to them.

Police will be in the area for several days, searching the area, Haffner said. Police continue to canvass the neighbourhood.

“We are encouraging anyone that may have any information related to a disturbance or any suspicious activity to call police,” he said.

Police tape remained around the townhouse on Monday.

Haffner said Yorke’s death is not related to a homicide in Kitchener last month.

On June 18, Ronald Chandler, 66, was found dead in his rental unit at 926 Courtland Ave. E. at 8:45 p.m.

Police were called to the townhouse by a family member.

Police say they did not know if the attack on Chandler was random or targeted. They have no suspects in the man’s stabbing death.

Yorke’s death is Waterloo Region’s third homicide of the year.

Lam Diing, 23, was stabbed in the neck after a fight at a house in Kitchener on April 15. He died later in hospital.

Diing, a refugee from Sudan, played football for the University of Waterloo.

Nicholas Salim Ndayisenga, 22, faces a charge of second-degree murder in connection to Diing’s death. Police say the men knew each other.

Anyone with information on the Yorke homicide can call police at 519-570-9777, ext. 8666 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-2228477.
