Elora Festival gets charitable status back in time for final concerts
ELORA — The Elora Festival is celebrating the reinstatement of its charitable status, after it was revoked in January by the Canada Revenue Agency.
It’s a crucial development for the local festival, which is entering its final weekend of performances, and means it can finally process donations again.
The festival lost its ability to do that in January, when it failed to file a return with the CRA’s charities directorate.
“It was an unfortunate error in process, rather than substance, and it hampered our ability to accept donations, which are critical to our success,” said board chair Charlotte Logan, in a statement.
It’s been a difficult few months for the Elora Festival, which parted ways with its famed artistic director Noel Edison over allegations of sexual misconduct.
Losing charitable status meant all donations the organization had received since January were held in trust, and charitable receipts couldn’t be issued.
The Elora Festival’s final weekend continues with six concerts, including Chantal Kreviazuk on Saturday night and The Elora Singers and Festival Orchestra performing Sunday.
Despite the tumultuous start, ticket sales have been strong.
“It has been a stellar season,” said Chris Sharpe, the festival’s general manager. “We are very grateful for the support of the community and our patrons.”
