Prominent football figure loses his fight with cancer

WATERLOO — The Waterloo Warriors and Laurier Golden Hawks are mourning the loss of a former football player and coach.

Chris Triantafil­ou, better known as “Greek,” died suddenly Thursday morning after a brief fight with cancer.

He was a coach with the Warriors football program for 19 years and a member of the Waterloo Warriors Department of Athletics and Recreation for 31 years. Prior to his coaching role at Waterloo, Triantafil­ou was a defensive back who played for the Golden Hawks under head coach Tuffy Knight in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

In a post on the Laurier Athletics website, Triantafil­ou was described as an “extremely caring, passionate and genuine person and made everyone around him feel important. His willingnes­s to get to know people while making personal connection­s is what made Triantafil­ou such a well-liked person.”

The family has also establishe­d a memorial fund, Coach Tri Scholarshi­p for Athletic Success, in his honour.

Friends are invited to a visitation at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo, this Sunday and Monday, from 1 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.
