Prominent football figure loses his fight with cancer
WATERLOO — The Waterloo Warriors and Laurier Golden Hawks are mourning the loss of a former football player and coach.
Chris Triantafilou, better known as “Greek,” died suddenly Thursday morning after a brief fight with cancer.
He was a coach with the Warriors football program for 19 years and a member of the Waterloo Warriors Department of Athletics and Recreation for 31 years. Prior to his coaching role at Waterloo, Triantafilou was a defensive back who played for the Golden Hawks under head coach Tuffy Knight in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
In a post on the Laurier Athletics website, Triantafilou was described as an “extremely caring, passionate and genuine person and made everyone around him feel important. His willingness to get to know people while making personal connections is what made Triantafilou such a well-liked person.”
The family has also established a memorial fund, Coach Tri Scholarship for Athletic Success, in his honour.
Friends are invited to a visitation at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo, this Sunday and Monday, from 1 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.
