KITCHENER — A motorist was killed Friday afternoon after a vehicle struck the front of a Kitchener LCBO store and rolled.

Emergency crews were called to the Alpine Centre plaza, near Ottawa Street South and Homer Watson Boulevard, at about 4:30 p.m.

Waterloo Regional Police Sgt. Bruce Sim said a vehicle travelling north in the parking lot lost control and struck the store. The lone occupant died at the scene.

Evidence markers traced the path of the vehicle through the lot.

It appears the vehicle sheared off a bollard at the front entrance to the store before striking the building.

Bricks, glass and debris from the overturned vehicle littered the sidewalk and roadway, and a front wheel lay torn off near the curb.

No one else in the busy retail plaza was injured.

“It’s just at the outset of the investigation,” Sim told reporters at the scene.

No information was released Friday afternoon about the victim’s age or gender, and there’s no word yet on what may have caused the crash.

A portion of the plaza parking lot was ringed with police tape as traffic officers examined the scene. The LCBO store was closed following the crash, and Sim asked people to avoid the area as the investigation continued.

Sim said investigators had spoken to some witnesses at the scene, but asked anyone else with information to call the traffic unit at 519-653-7700, ext. 8791.
