Godwin’s law appears
Re: Canada isn’t immune to political extremist bullying — Jan. 10
It did not even take one paragraph for Godwin’s law to make an appearance in Heather Mallick’s column. To paraphrase, “the longer a discussion is carried on, the more likely that someone will make a false equivalency to Hitler or the Nazis.”
A particularly disgusting example is near the end of the article, where a brutal attack on a German member of parliament is mentioned. Because the attack was directed against a politically right leaning MP (the “far right” AFD party), the attack is excused. To wit, Mallick writes: “As an old Germany, thought safely dead, reemerges, there will be more violence.” In this attack, it was not the “far right” that initiated the violence. However, the insinuation is made that “the Nazis” will now seek revenge.
Since 2015, the influx of more than a million unvetted immigrants from a vastly different culture has not gone without issue in Europe. Europeans, including Germans, have built a peaceful and prosperous society that is the envy of the world. How dare this writer condemn a people who wish to defend their culture and way of life by calling them Nazis. Martin Liehs
