Saints capture own tournament for 4th straight year

CAMBRIDGE — Trent Johnson scored 17 points and the

St. Benedict Saints rallied from a halftime deficit to win the Saints Invitation­al high school basketball tournament for the fourth straight year.

The Saints, who won five straight games over two days, finished the championsh­ip game on a 26-11 run to score a 52-47 win over the North Park Trojans on Saturday night at St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School. Ethan Andrew had 20 points for the Trojans, who defeated the Saints in the championsh­ip game of the Heinbuch Classic earlier this season.

St. Benedict, currently the first-place team in the District 8 league, advanced to the final of the 24-team tournament with a 47-43 win over the Eastwood Rebels. Ben Macarenhas lead the Saints with 19 points, while Ladera Ujullo Obang had 18 for the first-place team in the Waterloo County (WCSSAA) league.

North Park moved on with a 44-22 win over the St. Mary’s Eagles of Kitchener. O.J. Stewart had 13 points for North Park and Paolo Malacad had 10 for St. Mary’s.

Earlier Saturday, the Ursuline Lancers of Chatham scored a 66-62 win over the Assumption Crusaders of Burlington in the final of the eight-team junior tournament.

Meanwhile in Waterloo, the Centennial Spartans of Guelph defeated the Centre Wellington Falcons of Fergus, 63-51, in the championsh­ip game of the Highlander Classic at Sir John A. Macdonald Secondary School.
