Macron raps Brazil’s leader for disrespecting his wife
Don’t talk about my wife like that!
French president Emmanuel Macron slammed Brazil’s leader Jair Bolsonaro as “extremely disrespectful” for dissing Macron’s 66-year-old wife as unattractive.
“It’s sad, it’s sad first of all for him and for Brazilians,” said Macron, 41. “Brazilian women are probably feeling ashamed of their president.”
“I hope they will very soon have a president who is up to the job,” Macron added.
The war of the wives started Sunday when a supporter of the right-wing Bolsonaro posted photos of the two leaders’ wives. The post suggested that Bolsonaro’s 37-year-old wife is more attractive than Brigitte Macron.
“Do not humiliate the guy, ha ha,” Bolsonaro commented on the post in Portuguese.
That set off Macron, who is famously protective of his wife.
Ties have been frayed as France pushes back against the newly elected Bolsonaro’s efforts to clamp down on civil society and non-governmental organizations.
They spiralled downhill as Macron has spoken out about the fires raging in the Amazon rainforest. Bolsonaro has bristled at what he calls “colonialist” interference in Brazil’s internal affairs.
