East Cambridge residents won’t see construction relief until after 2025 as project expands

- BILL DOUCET

There will be no construction reprieve for East Galt residents once work on Beverly Street is completed.

With the current work on Beverly Street and the Beverly Street underpass project deferred to 2023 to align with work on Dundas Street, the area may continue to frustrate residents and drivers.

The reconstruction of Elgin Street North, from the CPR pedestrian underpass at the dead end of the street to Glamis Road is now proposed to run through 2024 and 2025. Small sections of Glamis Road and Ferguson Avenue, at Elgin Street North, will be included in the work.

The project to replace existing water mains and sanitary sewer lines along the road, as well as curbs and gutters, was originally announced in 2017. Additional work on the project now includes the installation of a storm sewer from Galt Avenue to Mill Creek to increase capacity and help mitigate flooding during heavy rainfall.

Streetscaping plans have also been added to the project.

A new multi-use trail will go in on the west side of Elgin Street North, from Glamis Road to Samuelson Street. Wider sidewalks will be built on the east side of Elgin Street North, and pedestrian refuge islands will be installed at Glamis Road, Winter Avenue, Galt Avenue and Bronson Avenue.

“The Elgin Street North reconstruction project represents a significant investment for our city,” said Mayor Kathryn McGarry.

“Plans for infrastructure improvements to the water distribution and storm drainage systems will include a number of pedestrian refuge islands, additional sidewalk connections, and active transportation improvements.”
