OPP roundup: Police hunt for pair who killed emu

An occasional roundup of unusual incidents reported by the Ontario Provincial Police.

Police are investigat­ing after an emu was killed.

Two unknown people went to a property in Fishervill­e, 50 kilometres south of Hamilton, on Wednesday around 3 a.m., OPP said.

They damaged a fence to get access to an animal pen.

“Once inside, an emu was injured by an unknown means, causing death to the animal,” police said. The pair fled.

“Causing unnecessar­y suffering to an animal is a criminal offence that carries a penalty of up to five years in jail upon conviction,” police said.

Anyone with informatio­n about the killing is asked to call police at 1-888-310-1122.

Hatchetman charged

A man brandished a hatchet in a dispute near Peterborou­gh.

Police were called on March 1 about a man screaming at people. He also spat on someone.

“The accused then retrieved a hatchet and began waving it around,” OPP said. “The hatchet was thrown away at which point it caused damage to a residence.”

A Peterborou­gh man, 31, faces five charges, including assault and causing a disturbanc­e.

Civilian helps nab suspects

A property owner helped police catch two break-in suspects.

Police were called Feb. 29 about a break and enter in progress at a commercial property in South Huron, south of Goderich.

“The property owner discovered two suspects and a minivan on their property,” OPP said. “The suspects fled the scene in the van, and the property owner followed, providing updates for police.”

Officers found the alleged culprits near Grand Bend.

Two people from Forest, Ont., a man, 42, and a woman, 23, face a string of charges.

Two charged with impaired

A motorist was charged after driving in the oncoming lane toward a police cruiser.

It happened on March 1 at 10 p.m. in Minden, 120 kilometres northeast of Barrie.

A Peterborou­gh woman, 35, was charged with impaired driving.

Four days later, at 7 p.m., police stopped a car driving in the oncoming lane in Dysart, 25 km northeast of Minden.

A St. Catharines man, 60, was charged with impaired driving.
