An occasional roundup of unusual incidents reported by the Ontario Provincial Police

An alleged drunk driver had an infant in the car.

On April 27 at 3:39 p.m., police responded to several calls of an erratic driver behind the wheel of a grey Mercedes on Paris Links Road in Brant County.

An infant was in a child seat. An Oakville woman, 27, was charged with impaired driving, dangerous driving and driving while using a hand-held communication device.

”Instances such as these highlight the potential dangers and consequences of impaired driving,” OPP said, “especially when innocent lives, such as that of a child, are put at risk.”

Classic car wrecked

Another alleged drunk driver wrecked a classic car.

On the night of April 22, a 1970sera Chevrolet Corvette left the road and struck several trees near Penetanguishene.

Police found the badly damaged car “lodged in a forest” about 25 metres from the road.

A local woman, 50, was charged with impaired driving.

Shooters had wrong address

Whoever fired shots at a house near Hawkesbury, east of Ottawa, made a crucial mistake.

“Police believe the suspects attended the wrong address and the residence was not the intended target,” OPP said.

Shots were fired on the night of April 7. No one was injured.

“This was an isolated incident and there is no threat to public safety at this time,” police said.

Man bites officer

A man trying to enter the library in Marmora and Lake, north of Belleville, on April 18 did not take it well when he learned it was closed.

Police responding to a report of a disturbance at 2:30 p.m. found a “belligerent” man who refused to speak to them.

“When officers attempted to take the male into custody, he resisted,” OPP said.

“During a later interaction, one officer was bitten by the individual and an attempt was made to bite another officer.”

A local man, 22, was charged with assaulting a peace officer, causing a disturbance and failing to comply with a probation order.

Truck driver vanishes

A truck driver from Newfoundland apparently vanished in Ontario.

The man, 51, was last seen on surveillance video at a gas station in Summerstown, southeast of Ottawa, on April 24.

His personal belongings were left in his transport truck, OPP said.

The man’s first name is Brian. He stands five feet 10 and weighs 200 pounds. He was last seen wearing a blue hoodie, jeans and possibly a ball cap.

“Investigators want to hear from motorists who have dashcam video from Highway 401 westbound, in the Boundary Road area near Cornwall from April 25 between 10:30 a.m. and noon,” police said.

“An individual partially matching Brian’s description had been reported along the highway at that time but could not be located when officers arrived.”

Man, 76, charged

A 76-year-old man faces two charges after allegedly driving his pickup truck at a man on foot.

Police were called to Main Street in Seaforth, 40 kilometres southeast of Goderich, last month for a report of a dispute.

“Two males were arguing while police were present, when one of the males drove their pickup truck directly at the other male on foot, almost striking them with the vehicle,” OPP said.

“The driver was immediately arrested and charged.”

A local man was charged with assault with a weapon and dangerous driving.

Woman rescued from river

Police officers rescued a woman from the fast-flowing Mississippi River in Carleton Place, southwest of Ottawa.

The young woman was in crisis when she jumped into the river on April 9, OPP said.

“Three officers waded chest deep into the strong current to bring the young woman to safety. All were fine after the incident.”
