Love is the Way

Wedding Bells (East) - - Editor's Letter - Alison McGill, Editor-in-Chief, @alisonmcgill

These are The now-famous words of Reverend Michael Curry, who shook up the royal establishment at the wedding of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry with his entertaining and very non-traditional address. “There’s power in love. There’s power in love to help and heal when nothing else can. There’s power in love to lift up and liberate when nothing else will.” This was not your typical royal wedding service, but the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are not your average royal couple.

#JustLikeUs, Meghan and Harry opted to break tradition and hyper-personalize their wedding day, which has truly made them the poster children for having your wedding day your way. They hired a fashion photographer instead of a trusted royal photographer for their official photographs. Traditional British fruitcake was sidelined in favour of a very 2018 wedding cake flavour: lemon-elderflower sponge cake. Meghan walked herself partway down the aisle, was the first royal bride to make a speech at her wedding reception, and the couple opted to delay their honeymoon to squeeze in a work engagement before jetting off. How thoroughly modern!

The royal wedding was particularly delightful for us here at

Weddingbells because it put weddings on the forefront of global consciousness. I was lucky enough to travel to Windsor Castle and St. George’s Chapel in advance of the wedding for a sneak peek at how it would all unfold. While in Windsor I even had an amazing Flytographer session, the results of which you see here, and was taken along the carriage processional route Harry & Meghan rode on their big day.

I was also in London for the royal wedding day and the week leading up to it—what energy the city had! Read about my visit and where to plan your perfect London honeymoon in our Destinations section on p. 162.

Another reason to love the royal wedding is all the amazing trends it has launched, which will no doubt continue to dominate for the next several seasons. From unadorned gowns to sexy second dresses, we give you a rundown of the best with “Royally Inspired,” p. 49.

Some of my other favourite things in this issue include our fun and fab fashion shoot in the city of glitter (“Viva Las Vegas,” p. 123); Assistant Editor Kim Aglipay’s roundup of bridal beauty advice from some of the world’s top pros (“Beauty Experts,” p. 82); and all our beautiful real weddings, which will inspire gorgeous ideas for your own party.

Keep up with us on social @weddingbellsmag to see where we're going and what we’re seeing that’s rocking our wedding world. Happy planning!
