Starting Place

Weddingbells (Toronto) - - Editors' Letter -

As much as wedding trends change, and celebrations morph and modernize, a few things remain constant. The biggest one is the planning process. There’s no getting around the tried-and-true formula of how to begin piecing together your dream day.

At Weddingbells we’re so often asked by the anxious newly engaged, “Where do I start?” Choosing your date is the logical first step on the road to wedding-dom, but finding a venue is actually the step that comes before that, as its availability will likely dictate your date.

Each year we highlight our top venue picks across Canada with the “Loveliest Venues” online feature. It is one of our top content hits and we love inspiring readers with the best and most beautiful places to wed in the country. We also are fortunate to travel internationally to show you extraordinary and exotic wedding locations—past destinations include Ireland, Disneyland, Hawaii, Barbados, and Turks and Caicos. In this issue we had the experience of a lifetime in Scotland shooting the fashion feature “Her Majesty” (p. 128) at the 600-year-old Borthwick Castle in the breathtaking Scottish Midlands.

The castle—which twice hosted Mary, Queen of Scots during her reign in the 16th century—recently underwent a massive renovation, transforming it into a beyond-luxurious bespoke venue and hotel. There are just 10 guest rooms in-house (imagine having your very own wedding-day castle!), and the venue can host intimate weddings for up to 85 people.

It was the perfect backdrop to showcase some very fashionforward bridal trends tinged with dark romance. Read more about our Scottish adventures at wedding

We have tons more style inspiration in this issue with the best gowns seen on the Spring 2018 New York Bridal Fashion Week runways (p. 50). Big trends to watch for include bows, bare shoulders, beading, and dramatic black details and accessories.

We’re enamoured with elaborate floral cakes (“Fleurology,” p. 88); passionate about green and garden-inspired party details (“Herbal Essence,” p. 84); and have rounded up a complete A to Z of must-have beauty items for your wedding day (p. 64).

We love seeing and sharing your real weddings in the magazine and online—please visit our website to submit yours. Follow us on social @weddingbellsmag so you don’t miss a minute of daily inspo, #BTS looks at what we’re up to, where we’re going and what is inspiring us.

Now, have you found your venue and picked the date yet? We’re ready to help you get planning!
