Roedde House Museum
The Roedde House is a historic (Victorian) residence in the West End of Vancouver that has been turned into an interactive museum. The house was originally owned by the family of Gustav Roedde, a German immigrant and the city’s first book binder. He used to bind collections of Lieder for his children to play and sing in the parlour. www.roeddehouse.org In 2013, Catherine Laub became the artistic director of the Second Sunday Concert Series at the Roedde House Museum. This series features local, professional, Classical musicians in a casual, interactive format. In order to honour the Roedde family’s heritage, I ensure that a certain portion of the concerts contains German repertoire. Past concerts have included violin and cello sonatas by Brahms, piano sonatas by Beethoven, songs by Felix and Fanny Mendelssohn, Brahms’ Liebeslieder Walzer for piano four hands and vocal quartet, to name some of the more familiar works. http://www.roeddehouse.org/en/activities/cultural-activities/second-sunday-concert-xbq The museum parlour had been used for concerts on an occasional basis for years, but I wondered if the museum would be interested in something more regular, so I approached the manager and pitched the idea of a monthly concert series. We’re now in our third season, with a successful small concert business model. We attract musicians like Nancy DiNovo, Stephen Smith, Jane Hayes and Daniel Bolshoy to our series and regularly sell out concerts. There is also a monthly jazz series at the Roedde House based upon our model.
