Up­done his­toric ho­tels, mid-cen­tury ar­chi­tec­ture aplenty, achingly lo­cal restau­rants (and cheese shops, and butch­ers, and can­dle­stick mak­ers), a re­vi­tal­ized down­town arts scene, craft brew­eries and dis­til­leries, the sec­ond-dens­est botan­i­cal gar­den in Amer­ica—this ain’t your Aunt Alice’s Berke­ley.
