The world’s largest chamber music festival, Ottawa’s own Chamberfest, turns 25 this year! Chamber music, composed for only a handful of instruments, was the indie music of the 18th century, when orchestral classical was pop. The festival’s impressive lineup and attendance prove how popular the genre continues to be. Concerts, free panels, and interviews with artists take place at interesting venues all over the city. Among this year’s events Romani violinist Roby Lakatos and his ensemble open the festival at Dominion-Chalmers United Church (July 26); the Canadian
Guitar Quartet plays the
National Gallery of Canada
(Aug. 7); Transylvanian singer
Koszika marries tango and jazz standards at La Nouvelle Scène (Aug. 1); and, for two evenings, Governor General’s Awardwinning pianist Angela Hewitt continues her Bach Odyssey through the eminent composer’s keyboard works at DominionChalmers (Aug. 4 & 6).
