Avant Garde

Festooned with Soviet propaganda and Russian relics, Avant

Garde is the only place in town to explore the striking posters of the Cold War, with a drink in hand no less. On top of Stoli vodka and Baltika beer, there’s a menu featuring Russian nibbles and frequent live music acts to complete the experience. 135 Besserer St., avantgardebar.com

The Albion Rooms

Alongside the lounge chairs and low tables of The Albion Rooms are a polished bar with standing tables, a glass-walled charcuterie station, and a dining room.

This hot spot’s three pillars are craft cocktails, local beers, and a farm-to-table menu, all of which are well worth exploring on any night of the week. 33 Nicholas St., thealbionrooms.com

Copper Spirits and Sights

The rooftop bar of the downtown Andaz Hotel, Copper Spirits and

Sights, provides a breathtaking view of the ByWard Market and Parliament Hill. Complete with outdoor fire pit, this 16th-floor establishment is an ideal place to watch the sunset with a NCC (National Capital Caesar) or a Copper Skyline: tequila, Grand Marnier and burnt citrus bitters. 325 Dalhousie St., ottawa.andaz.hyatt.com

Atari

The floor alone at Atari is a colourful and intricate homage to video games and pop culture, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. This themed club on Dalhousie serves 24 creatively-named cocktails like Princess Zelda, Captain Jack Sparrow, and Gin I. Joe. When the weather allows, the rooftop patio is a hidden gem. 297 Dalhousie St., atariottawa.com

Charlotte

Like a home away from home, the retro-chic Charlotte is a lounge that puts luxury above all else. Fancy a couch or cozy up to the wood, brass, and quartz bar where they serve a wide range of local beers and sours. Try a few in the beer flights special on Tuesdays, or go for any of their lovingly-made cocktails, including one mean Sex on the Beach. 340b Elgin St., charlotteottawa.com

Ward 14

At Ward 14, clink glasses over Formica tables surrounded by a bounty of vintage treasures and trinkets, all of which are for sale. It will be hard to leave this consignment bar without a tchotchke, or without trying the infamous tater tot poutine. Drink Mommy’s Little Secret — gin mixed with radler — and dream about buying that terrarium full of taxidermy. 139 Preston St., wardfourteen.com
