TO SEP 23 Every summer, the distinctive redand-white tents of Bard on the Beach (page 76) spring up in seaside Vanier Park, signalling another year of imaginative interpretations of William Shakespeare’s timeless plays. This year’s line-up includes four of his finest. On the main stage, Much Ado About Nothing (pictured) turns Beatrice and Benedick into movie stars in 1959 Italy, while The Winter’s Tale includes history’s most famous stage direction: “Exit, pursued by a bear.” On the second stage, The Merchant of Venice is updated to modern-day Venice, and The Two Gentlemen of Verona features a new four-legged star in the making: Gertie the basset hound in the scenestealing role of Crab the dog.
