Tastes of Gastown
The original townsite’s cobbled streets are home to myriad flavours. At Tuc Craft Kitchen (pictured; page 71), the changing menu showcases regional tastes, including elk carpaccio, Salt Spring Island mussels with Fraser Valley sausage, fish stew of Lois Lake trout and ahi tuna, and hanger steak bourguignon with grassraised beef from local farms. The city’s original gastropub, The Irish Heather (page 71) pairs pints (including properly poured Guinness) with hearty fare, from a “posh” grilled cheese sandwich with Quebec brie and aged cheddar to fish ’n’ chips of cod with mushy peas. For classic Italian in truly Tuscan surroundings, head to the cozy confines of Al Porto (page 70).
