Artful GrAFFiti FInDInG CREATIVE WARMTH In WHISTLER
Like many Whistler locals, Anna Lynch moved here for the incredible skiing. Upon arriving in Whistler, she intended to join a knitting club like the one she’d been part of back home, but she wound up forming her own club instead. Knitty Gritty isn’t just a social club, however; it also sells wool on its website, and hosts instructional seminars.
Members of Knitty Gritty collectively created a 16-foot-long scarf that was draped around the inukshuk (Inuit stone figure) at Whistler’s Village Gate entrance. An unknown party promptly removed it. It appears some people consider knitting a form of graffiti.
Since discovering yarn bombs is half the fun, none of the currently decorated locations will be revealed here—you’ll just have to find them for yourself. Anna Lynch says she’s always kicking around ideas, and has plans for future projects, as does Hayley Wirsching.
Says Lynch, “I’m still hoping to do some kind of trail where you could actually be led into something where you encounter progressively more knit stuff. It’s just such a Whistler thing…there are so many trails, and so many little local secrets.”
