GET COZY WITH THE LOCALS

- - STORY BY REBECCA WOOD BARRETT

In our hyper-paced digital age libraries are expanding their services to meet the cultural, artistic and literary needs of their communities. The Whistler Public Library recently underwent a mini-renovation, reshaping the entrance to make it easier to access staff, and created more room for the public. In addition, a change in its service model makes library-wide interaction barrier-free. The Whistler Public Library invites visitors to mingle with locals, and experience a library Whistler-style. Settle in to a deep, cozy couch in the fireplace lounge to read a magazine. Sip a hot coffee and chat with a local. Browse the magazine stacks. Or take your tots to Marmot Meadows, a comfy spot for children to read and relax. Remarkably, at a time in history when people spend more time connecting via screens than in person, Whistler’s library has become the hub of the community and supporter of social sustainability. Through free programming which includes regular workshops, the film movement series, toddler story time and more, participants can become part of a face-to-face social network. If you’re looking for a truly local experience while travelling, visit Whistler’s library, and meet the diverse spectrum of people who live here.
