If you’re considering venturing out of bounds, proper education is an essential tool for exploring untamed backcountry terrain. For those hearing the call of distant mountains, Whistler Blackcomb’s free half-day, introductory-level avalanche awareness courses are a great place to start training. Hosted by WB’s ski patrol team, the tours provide key information about safe travel, terrain evaluation, avalanche phenomenon, control measures, safety equipment and rescue techniques. Avalanche awareness tours are held daily at 12:30 pm, and take approximately 2.5 hours. Tours begin at the avalanche hut at the top of Solar Coaster Express chairlift on Blackcomb Mountain.
