The bond between a female bird and her young starts even before the egg is hatched! Researchers have found that by changing the conditions inside the egg, female canaries essentially “tell” their young what to expect when they hatch. If moms spend less time sitting on the eggs and warming them because they’re spending more time looking for scarce food, then the chicks will stay in the egg longer and try to gain more weight.
