Verlander gives up 9 hits in early loss

Wise slam caps sweep for Sox

Javier Vazquez threw 72⁄ innings of

3 three-hit ball and Alexei Ramirez homered to stake the Chicago White Sox to a 4-2 victory Sunday over the Detroit Tigers in the first game of a doublehead­er.

Vazquez (12-13) struck out eight to finish the game with 2,003 career strikeouts, becoming the 62nd pitcher in majorleagu­e history to reach the 2,000 mark.

He fanned Edgar Renteria with one out in the fifth to accomplish the feat and moved past Andy Benes and Billy Pierce into 61st place on the career strikeouts list.

Only one Tiger got as far as second base against Vazquez, who was practicall­y infallible before walking Dusty Ryan with two outs in the eighth and finally getting the hook.

Juan Uribe broke a scoreless tie with a two-out RBI single off starter Justin Verlander (10-16) in the fifth, bringing Ken Griffey Jr. home after the veteran outfielder lined a one-out double off the wall in centre field.

Ramirez drove a Verlander offering in- to the left-field seats with one out in the seventh to give Chicago a 2-0 lead.

It was his 17th homer this year.

The Sox added two more runs in the eighth on an RBI triple by DeWayne Wise and a run-scoring double Jermaine Dye, at which point Verlander exited the game.

Verlander gave up nine hits, walked two and struck out two in 72⁄ innings.

After jumping out to a commanding 7-0 advantage after six innings in the nightcap, the White Sox watched the lead evaporate courtesy of Mike Hessman’s tworun shot in the seventh and Marcus Thames’ grand slam to cap a five-run eighth and knot the game.

Following a pitching change, Wise belted Chicago’s 10th grand slam of the season off Kyle Farnsworth (2-3).
