No matter its name, we don’t need another tax
We already have an income tax, a goods and services tax and many other taxes. Now the Liberals want to add a carbon tax contained in their election platform called Green Shift.
Under this plan, businesses selling or using fossil fuels such as coal, oil, motor fuels or natural gas would pay a carbon tax to the federal government which would probably result in higher prices for the goods and services they sell. This tax means more inflation. Some of the money raised by the carbon tax would be returned to us in lower income taxes. Some would be spent by the government.
What the government returns to us would probably be eaten up by higher prices we would have to pay.
To operate this tax, the government will probably have to new employees and purchase expensive equipment. The carbon tax means bigger government.
The Canadian economy does not need this additional tax burden. GEORGE SCHOEBE
