‘High-risk’ search for fugitive comes up empty

Police hunting an accused killer — one of six inmates who escaped from a Saskatchewan jail three weeks ago — came away from a daylong search in northern Manitoba empty-handed Monday.

“We’re certain he’s not there,” RCMP spokeswoman Sgt. Line Karpish said Monday after a heavily-armed team of officers ended their operation at the Opaskwayak Cree Nation, near The Pas.

RCMP had evacuated 18 units of a 20unit complex in what witnesses had described as a standoff between police and at least one escaped inmate.
