It’s ‘shopping flu’ season

You might notice people missing from your workplace periodically over the next month or so, having contracted the “holiday shopping flu,” according to survey results released Thursday.

The survey, commissioned by eBay Canada and carried out by market research firm TNS, had six per cent of respondents saying they have called in sick for work to go holiday shopping. More than 20 per cent said they had at least considered it.

Thirteen per cent said their shopping goals at this time of the year distract them from their duties at work.

Perhaps not surprisingly, eBay linked the findings with people being “stuck in an oldfashioned shopping mall mindset,” suggesting more online shopping could help.

“Rather than dashing to the mall at lunch time, shopping from the comfort of your desk is a viable option, and certainly more productive and less stressful,” Kimberly Moffit, a Toronto psychotherapist, said in a statement issued by eBay

Thirteen per cent of respondents said they would consider online shopping at work.
