Cottam’s Quick drives to crown

Vipers end streak at home

Cottam’s Rob Quick has a message for the Tirecraft Comp 4 class in 2013. Watch out for next year. “We’re going full tilt and we’ll have something for you,” Quick said after winning the season championsh­ip race at South Buxton Raceway Friday night.

Quick starting in the fourth row of the 20-lap season finale and went on to win his second career championsh­ip race, the first since 2009.

“We got a good run and when there was a hole, we were lucky to get right through it,” said Quick, who battled much of the race with fellow Cottam driver Denis DeSerrano.

After multiple lead changes, Quick was back up front with three laps to go and took the checkered flag.

Blenheim’s Shawn Jones was second and DeSerrano third.

Tilbury’s Gerry Rivait and James Beaulieu finished fifth and sixth, with Ryan Beaulieu 12th.

Jones won his third straight division points championsh­ip while Ryan Beaulieu finished fourth, Rivait sixth and James Beaulieu 12th.

Kingsville’s Rob Young won his first feature since returning to South Buxton five years ago.

Young started in the third row of the Windride Transporta­tion feature but shot to the lead before the cars completed a lap. Young led all 10 laps to take the non-points feature.

Young, who finished fourth in the final standings, will be one of the inductees into the Checker Flag Raceway Hall of Fame Sunday.

In other races, Shrewsbury’s Jim Dale Jr. captured up his eighth career track points title and his eighth season championsh­ip race victory in the Schinkels Gourmet Meats UMP Modifieds.

Leamington’s Joel Dick finished fourth in the race and third in the final points. Windsor’s Dan McIntyre finished fifth in the race and his father Emerson McIntyre was ninth.

Brandon Thirlby, from Traverse City, Mich., passed Ridgetown’s Dale Glassford on the final turn to win the Glencoe Auto Recyclers UMP Late Model championsh­ip race.

Spits picks

Windsor Spitfires draft pick Austin Czarnik of Miami-Ohio was named a pre-season Second Team All-CCHA selection.

Spitfires draftee Evan Allen shares the goal-scoring lead for the U.S. NTDP under-18 squad with two through four games.

Another draftee, Will Butcher, has one assist in four games, while Michael Babcock, son of Detroit Red Wings coach Mike Babcock, is pointless through four games.

Junior B

The LaSalle Vipers won at home for the first time this season Wednesday.

After a 0- 3- 1 start at the Vollmer Centre, the Vipers beat the Sarnia Legionnair­es 5-3 in junior b hockey in LaSalle.

Korey Morgan scored two goals, Dylan Denomme, Dylan Seguin and Nathan Savage added singles and Taylor Speed faced 25 shots for the Vipers, who are 3-0-1 on the road this year.

LaSalle will be in Fort Erie Saturday at 5:10 p.m.

Junior C

The Essex 73’s defeated the Wallacebur­g Lakers 6-2 in junior c hockey in Wallacebur­g Wednesday.

Jordan Ryan scored twice, Alex Garon, Eric Shaw, Curtis Prymack and Dylan Solecki also scored and Arren Romeril stoped 24 shots for the 73’s, who moved into a first-place tie with Belle River.

Also Wednesday, the Kingsville Comets ended a sevengame losing streak with a 5-3 win in Mooretown.

Daniel Beaudoin had the hat trick with the other goals going to Frank Desjardin and Ryan Desjarlais.

Riverside skating

Alison Schumacher of the Riverside Skating Club finished first in the pre-novice division at the Isabelle Henderson competitio­n on the weekend in Paris, Ontario.

Riverside skaters found the podium four more times.

Lauren Renshaw finishing second in pre-juvenile, Alyssa D’Asti finished second in prenovice, Rubie Diemer finished third in juvenile and Jerah Diemer finished third in novice.

Ainsley Fabel finished fifth in pre- juvenile and Molly Ghanam was fifth in junior.

Pare shines

Melissa Pare netted 10 points as the Villanova Wildcats defeated the Belle River Nobles 29-27 Wednesday in WECSSAA Tier I senior girls basketball.

The Nobles were led by Myah Robillard, who scored a gamehigh 16 points.

In Tier III senior girls action, Lisa Hamilton had 12 points to lead Ste. Cecile to a 36-16 victory over UMEI. Megan Annisette added 10 points for the Spirit, while rookie Sophia Benzinger added eight points.

Kianna Epp scored seven points to lead UMEI.

Alyssa Hickmott scored 16 points as Harrow edged Maranatha 28-24.

Marie Azzopardi led Marantha with six points.

Hoops clinic

The North Pole Hoops showcase clinic scheduled for this weekend has moved to St. Clair College.

Originally planned for Herman, strong registrati­on forced organizers into a larger venue.

The cost is $130 per player for three days.

Saints soccer

The St. Clair College Saints men’s soccer team moved into the national rankings for the first time this season.

The Saints entered the CCAA’s top-15 rankings at No. 13.

Leading the polls is NAIT Ooks (Edmonton).

The Saints sit in third place in the OCAA’s West Division with a 4-1-1 mark.

They’ll face Fanshawe at Amherstbur­g’s UCCC field Friday at 4:30 p.m.

Forward Brian Santos leads the Saints with six goals while Gabriel Poulino has four goals. Jordan Lidia, who had goals in the Saints’ recent upsets of Humber and Sheridan, is also the CCAA’s feature male athlete for this week.
