Small fundraisers make a difference

- NORMA BROCKENSHIRE, President, Windsor and Essex County Cancer Centre Foundation, Windsor

Each year, more and more patients are cured of cancer. But we still lose too many fine people.

Fifteen years ago, the Hogan family launched the Joe Hogan Memorial Golf Tournament in memory of a devoted husband and father.

Every year since, thanks to the tireless efforts of the Hogans, the energy of their volunteers, and the commitment of their sponsors and participants, the Windsor and Essex County Cancer Centre Foundation has been the recipient of funds to invest in local cancer services.

Cancer patients in our community have been the grateful beneficiaries.

Sadly, in August, just weeks before the tournament, Sherron Hogan passed away from cancer. We are reminded that in spite of tremendous progress in battling the disease, we cannot let up in the fight.

This year, the Joe Hogan Memorial Golf Tournament donated a remarkable $30,000 to the Cancer Centre Foundation’s It’s In Your Jeans capital campaign to fight prostate cancer and treat other urological disorders. This generous gift will help fund a new Men’s Health Centre in Windsor Regional Hospital by assisting with the purchase of the revolutionary da Vinci Surgical Assisting Robot.

And because cancer is a family issue, the money will also help acquire advanced laboratory equipment that will help not only men, but women also, for all cancers.

Earlier detection, earlier diagnosis, and earlier treatment are often the best antidotes to cancer.

Thanks to the generosity of the community through events like the Hogan Tournament, the Cancer Centre Foundation can continue to purchase the needed medical equipment that will help bring comfort, cure and hope in the most timely and effective way to local cancer patients.

Thank you again, Cindy, Doug and Dan.
