Still waiting for school safety zone

-

Re: Residents approve of traffic-calming measures, by Chris Thompson, Oct. 3.

The Windsor Star reported on Oct. 3 that a new trafficcalming initiative is being proposed in Ward 1 along Dominion and Longfellow roads. I’m glad to see city council is addressing this safety hazard.

However, I hope the residents in that area are more successful than those of us who have been raising similar concerns around area schools. In the fall of 2009, city council supported a pilot project at Northwood Public School after lobbying by Northwood school council, parents, students and the Greater Essex County School Board.

This project was to be used as a blueprint to provide a safe environment for all students attending every school across the city. We left council elated, thinking our hard work had been rewarded.

October 2012 has us still waiting for this plan to come to fruition. Recently, an Ontario survey reported that threequarters of parents observed drivers breaking the law in school zones.

That’s been our experience at Northwood Street, and unfortunately, we have had very poor enforcement. Fortunately, we haven’t had any fatalities, but I wonder if that’s what it will take before we see any results.

I have been involved in this community for many years, and I have never been so frustrated or disappointed by city council. Each election causes many to complain about low voter turnout.

It’s this lack of action that has more and more of us saying, “What’s the point?”
