RAIDERS UPSET REBELS IN FOOTBALL SEMIFINAL.

Assumption upsets Riverside in football semifinal

Aleah Marton netted 15 points as the General Amherst Generals captured their 11th consecutiv­e WECSSAA senior girls basketball championsh­ip with a 62-17 win over the Essex Red Raiders in Friday’s AA final.

“This year we were young, but we developed as a team as the year went on,” Generals coach Dom Silvaggio said.

Olivia Starling added 10 points for the Generals, who will take on the winner from Chatham-Kent in next week’s SWOSSAA final.

“It’s going to be tough,” Silvaggio said.

General Amherst has won a medal at OFSAA nine straight years. Last year, the Generals won a silver medal.

In the senior girls AAA final, Rylee Welsh netted nine points as the Villanova Wildcats beat the Kingsville Cavaliers 42-34.

Brittany Rocheleau added eight points for the Wildcats.

Natalie Geddes-Lopez scored a game-high 16 points for the Cavs.

Lancers sweep

The Windsor Lancers beat the York Lions 78-70 Friday at the St. Denis Centre to improve to 1-2 in OUA men’s basketball.

“I’m very much unimpresse­d with our team,” Lancers coach Chris Oliver said. “I don’t think effort was an issue, but you’ve got to execute.”

Enrico Diloreto led the Lancers with 15 points. Bradford Parker added 14, Lien Phillip scored 11 and Khalid AbdelGabar netted 10.

In the women’s game, the Lancers improved to 2-1 with a resounding 82-29 decision over the Lions.

Co-captains Miah Langlois and Jessica Clemencon each scored 14 points for Windsor.

Griffins golden

The Herman Green Girffins capped off a perfect season with a 67-57 victory over the Assumption Purple Raiders in the junior girls AA basketball final Friday night.

Herman, which finished 23-0 this season, were led by Carleigh LeBelle’s 21 points.

Football roundup

The Assumption Purple Raiders pulled off an upset in the WECSSAA football Arnott Conference semifinal Friday.

Desmond Verro threw three touchdown passes and ran in another three as the Purple Raiders knocked off the topranked Riverside Rebels 40-28 at the University of Windsor Alumni Stadium.

“We kind of thought we could beat them going into the game,” Assumption head coach Steve Bauer said.

“The kids were outstandin­g. They believed in themselves.”

Not only did the Purple Raiders eliminate the No. 1 team, but they came back from a 14-0 deficit in the first quarter.

With the Rebels clinging to a 28-27 lead late in the game, Verro returned a kick 85 yards to put the Purple Raiders up for good. Verro added another 78yard TD run to secure the victory and send the Purple Raiders to the final, where they’ll play the L’Essor Aigles in the final next week.

In the last two games, Verro has seven touchdown passes and five rushing TDs.

“He’s an outstandin­g player,” Bauer said of Verro. “We have some really good receivers and he just hits them.”

In the Newman Conference semifinals, James Morgan had two TDs as the Essex Red Raiders defeated the St. Anne Saints 28-14. Matt Hobson also added a TD while Will Wuerch had four extra points.

In the late game, Herman beat Cardinal Carter 34-14.

OUA hockey

The ninth- ranked Windsor Lancers extended their winning streak to seven games with a 5-1 victory over the Nipissing Lakers in OUA men’s hockey in North Bay Friday.

Spencer Pommells scored three goals, Evan Stibbard had a goal and three assists, Curtis Longland added a goal and Chad Shepley and Drew Palmer had two assists each.

In women’s hockey, Jenny MacKnight scored 13 seconds into overtime to give Windsor a 4-3 victory over the Brock Badgers in St. Catharines.

MacKnight, Candice Chevalier and Erinn Noseworthy had goals in regulation.

Four Nations

Ruthven’s Meghan Agosta-Marciano scored a goal in Canada’s 4-3 comeback victory over Sweden Friday in the Four Nations Cup women’s hockey tournament in Lake Placid, N.Y.

Canada finished the roundrobin portion of the tournament with a 3-0 record and advanced to today’s final against Finland (2-1), which upset the United States 3-1 in the late game Friday.

Junior C

The Wheatley Sharks defeated the Belle River Canadiens 4-3 in junior C hockey at Lakeshore Arena Friday.

Wheatley took a 4-0 lead on a pair of goals by Jon Woelk and singles by Brett Babkirk and Austin Thompson.

Belle River replied with goals by Mike Ditty, Hunter Corp and James Shelton.
