Windsor cop faces new drug charge

- TREVOR WILHELM

The Windsor police officer arrested for allegedly smuggling crack cocaine over the border is facing another drug possession charge.

In addition to the charge he faces in Michigan, Const. David Bshouty, 31, is now also charged in Windsor with possession of a controlled substance.

Windsor police charged Bshouty Tuesday in relation to a small quantity of prescription pills suspected to be Oxycodone. The service’s risk management unit is investigating.

Chief Al Frederick, who held a news conference the first time Bshouty was arrested, isn’t commenting on the latest charge.

Bshouty was first arrested April 12. U.S. Homeland Security nabbed him when he crossed the Ambassador Bridge heading into Michigan. American authorities were on the lookout for Bshouty after getting a heads up from Windsor police, who conducted a two-month internal investigation.

He is charged in Detroit with felony possession of a controlled substance less than 25 grams.

Bshouty was released on bail after posting 10 per cent of a $25,000 bond, but not before spending three nights in a Michigan jail.

The initial investigation of Bshouty, who worked patrol since joining the force as a cadet in 2009, began Feb. 10 after an anonymous tip about illegal drug activity.

On Feb. 14, Windsor police reached out to U.S. Homeland Security about what they’d learned. Then on April 12, Bshouty crossed the Ambassador Bridge. Officers and special agents with the Detroit Border Enforcement Security Task Force, a team spearheaded by Homeland Security Investigations, stopped him around 1:40 p.m. They searched his car and found about three grams of crack cocaine.

Police are asking anyone with information to call 226674-1360 or Crime Stoppers at 519-258-TIPS.
