EXPRESS LAND WILLIAMS JR., GOOD FROM POWER.

Blue Jackets recall ex-Spit Rychel

-

The Windsor Express beefed upped its front court in a trade announced Friday with the Mississauga Power.

Windsor acquired forward Kirk Williams Jr. and the rights to former Express centre George Goode from the Power in exchange for the club’s firstround pick in the 2015-16 NBL of Canada Draft.

“Kirk is a guy that’s an en- ergizer bunny,” Express head coach and director of basketball operations Bill Jones said. “He’s someone that we think will be able to play at 100 per cent and give that effort we need in the frontcourt.”

The six-foot-seven, 205-pound Williams Jr. won the NBL of Canada sixth man of the year award in 2013-14 when he averaged 13.2 points, 4.2 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.1 steals per game.

“He reminds me exactly of Kevin Loiselle as far as work ethic,” Jones said of Williams Jr., who has averaged 12.8 points and six rebounds in nine games this season with Mississauga. “He plays hard every second that he’s on the court.”

Williams Jr. is currently sitting out a four-game league sus- pension from a game last month where the league determined he took a swing at Brampton’s Theo Davis, which sparked an altercation between both teams. He will not be in the lineup Saturday when the Express face the A’s in Brampton.

“I believe he still has a couple games left to serve,” Jones said.

Because of that, Jones does not have to make a corresponding roster move in order to make room for Williams Jr.

As for Goode, the Express dealt his rights to Mississauga in September as part of the deal to obtain guard Ryan Anderson.

“He’s over in Germany,” Jones said of Goode. “If he ever came back during the season or next year, we’d have his rights.”

Lancers all-stars

Forwards Jenny MacKnight and Bree Polci of the University of Windsor women’s ice hockey team have been named to the OUA women’s hockey All-Stars squad that will play two exhibition games against Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team.

Jim Hunter, the Lancer’s head coach, will be part of the OUA staff.

In the first game on Friday, Canada defeated the OUA allstars 2-0. The second game will be played Sunday at 11 a.m. at the North Wentworth Arena in Hamilton.

MacKnight is tied for the Lancers’ points lead with 13 (six goals, seven assists) while Polci has five assists in 14 games.

The Lakeshore Canadiens scored seven straight goals to overcome an early 2-0 deficit to beat the Wheatley Sharks 7-3 at the Lakeshore MURF Friday night in Junior C action.

Steve Sartor scored twice, while Sebastian Kanally, Joe Binder, Luke Sanko, Cameron MacDougall and Hunter Corp also scored. John Jeffries made 21 saves for the Canadiens.

Elsewhere, the Amherstburg Admirals fell 7-6 to the Alvinston Flyers as Joe Archer scored the game- winner at 18:07 mark of the third period.

Mark Gangnon scored twice for the Admirals while Arren Romeril made 27 saves.

Rychel returns

Kerby Rychel’s return to the AHL lasted all of two days.

Rychel was recalled by the Columbus Blue Jackets Friday after the team placed Scott Hartnell on injured reserve with a broken finger.

In four games with the Blue Jackets, Rychel has three assists. In the AHL with Springfield, he has 13 points in 23 games.
