Veterans luncheon was a great success
The recent Veterans Appreciation Day luncheon at the Serbian Centre was a great success.
This year, 100 history students with their teachers from six high schools were invited to participate in the first “students speak to veterans and veterans speak to students” program. Their conversations were videorecorded and will be made available on our website.
The videos of veterans and students together will never be forgotten. Their conversations, which captured a special moment in time, will be available online for years, for veterans, students, their families and future generations to enjoy.
As usual, a great time was had by all at the Nov. 11 luncheon, our 14th. We encourage anyone who attended to share their comments on our Veterans Memories Project website.
Our annual event was particularly special this year as we also had the Walkerville high school choir singing anthems, and when the designated piper did not show up as planned to lead in the March On, Walkerville’s Patti Hopper had student Andrea Gevaert sing a most beautiful rendition of Amazing Grace.
Ted Bachmeier sang songs of the era as well as many old favourites.
Additionally, we had the Unifor Local 444 Red Shirts group volunteer their time ushering and also providing valet service with Motor City Chrysler vans.
