Former St. Clair Beach councillor running

- TREVOR WILHELM

A former St. Clair Beach councillor and deputy mayor has entered the race for election in the Tecumseh Ward 2 byelection.

Scott Shields announced Monday he submitted his nomination papers for the Oct. 14 vote.

“I believe my extensive previous elected experience in St. Clair Beach, now Ward 2 Tecumseh, along with familiarity with working with the various levels of government and in management will allow me to hit the ground running and be an effective voice for the residents and the local businesses for the balance of this term of office,” Shields said in a media release.

Shields was born and raised in the Village of St. Clair Beach, which became Ward 2.

He was also a councillor and deputy mayor of St. Clair Beach between 1988 and 1998.

Shields is the first to announce his plan to run for the position, left vacant by Coun. Mike Rohrer, who died suddenly in May.

Others vying for the job must file a nomination form in the town clerk’s office between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. from Monday to Friday.

Forms must be submitted in person along with a declaration of qualification, proof of identification and a filing fee of $100. Fees can be paid with cash, a certified cheque, money order or debit card.

The final day for filing nomination papers is Aug. 30.
