Tecumseh athlete wrestles in Turkey

Tecumseh’s Linda Morais, who is a L’Essor high school product, was named to Canada’s 15-member team to compete at the 12th FISU world university wrestling championsh­ips, which start Tuesday and run through Sunday in Corum, Turkey.

Majoring in exercise science at Concordia University in Montreal, the 5-foot5, 140-pound Morais is in her fourth year of school and is a three-time CIS all-Canadian in the women’s 58kg division.

Saints take silver: The St. Clair College Saints women’s softball team reached the final at the OCAA championsh­ip in Kitchener, but had to settle for the silver medal.

The Saints fell 11-6 in the final of the double-knockout tournament to Oshawa’s Durham College, which built a 7-0 lead early in the game.

Sarah Bondy had three hits for the Saints while Mackenzie Taylor-Noah, Micheala Rilett and Alexa Georgiou each had two hits.

Georgiou and Allison Telfer were both named to the tournament all-star team.

Saints baseball awards: St. Clair College Saints third baseman Max Ayarza won the OCAA baseball batting title with a .481 average while Kyle Breitner was named the league’s pitcher of the year for the third-straight season after posting a 5-0 record with a 1.53 earnedrun average.

Both Ayarza and Breitner were named OCAA all-stars along with Saints catcher Jeff Watkin, who batted .412.

Saints softball awards: St. Clair College Saints fourthyear pitcher Alexa Georgiou was named OCAA pitcher of the year after finishing the season with a 10-2 record and 1.91 earned –run average.

Georgiou was named the OCAA all-star team along with first baseman Skyler Patteson, who finished second in the league with a .471 batting average and leaguelead­ing 41 hits.

Vardar soccer crown: The 2001 Vardar Windsor Vipers boys’ soccer team won the 2016 Adidas Wolf River Soccer Classic in Memphis, Tenn.

The team went 5-0 in the tournament and beat clubs from Alabama, Arkansas and Tennessee.

In the final, the Vipers blanked the Arkansas Rush, which is a team that reached the state final, by a 2-0 score.

Michael Zivcic scored both goals for the Vipers while Pietro D’Agostini posted a clean sheet in net to record the shutout.
