Holy Names falls in final of U of W boys’ basketball tournament

The Holy Names Knights fell in Saturday’s final at the 60th University of Windsor Invitation­al High School Boys’ Basketball Tournament at the St. Denis Centre.

The Sarnia Northern Vikings beat the Knights 68-59. Isiah Byrd led the Knights with 20 points and Rodhr Amada added 12.

Oakville Holy Trinity beat the Catholic Central Comets 73-48 in the third-place game with Caleb Akinsanya leading the Comets with 12 points.

Holy Names reached the final after beating Catholic Central 7736 in the championsh­ip semifinal. Ahmad had 17 points in that game and Byrd chipped in with 14.

The St. Anne Saints fell 50-44 to Hamilton Sir Allan MacNab in the consolatio­n semifinal. Blake Ondricko had 11 points for the Saints and Hendrick Stamm had 10.

Canada rallies past U.S.: Ruthven’s Meghan Agosta had four shots, but failed to record a point in Canada’s 5-3 win over the United States in Plymouth, Mich.

Agosta, who was named an alternate captain for the team, saw the Canadians rally with three unanswered goals in the third period for the win in the first game of Canada’s women’s national team December series. The two teams are set to wrap up the two-game series Monday in Sarnia.

Vipers fall to Nationals: The race for the top spot in the Western Conference of the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League got a little tighter on Saturday.

The first-place LaSalle Vipers fell 5-1 on the road to the second-place London Nationals, who moved to within four points of the top spot in the conference.

Daniel Beaudoin’s goal in the first period had the Vipers (24-5-0-3) briefly even with the Nationals (23-7-1-0) at 1-1, but London closed with the game’s final four goals.

Eli Billing made 35 saves for the Vipers while former LaSalle goalie Cameron Zanussi finished with 31 saves for the Nationals.

Flyers roll to victory: Blake Blain, Liam Hogan and Mark Gangnon each scored twice to lead the Leamington Flyers to an 8-2 win on the road over the Lambton-Shores Predators on Saturday in Western Conference play in the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League.

Griffin Robinson and Josh PopeFergus­on added single goals for the fourth-place Flyers (18-8-1-6).

Admirals hit double digits: Cory Burns scored twice and finished with four points to help the Amherstbur­g Admirals to a 9-2 win over the Petrolia Flyers in Bill Stobbs Division play in the Provincial Junior Hockey League on Saturday.

It was the 10th straight win for the fourth-place Admirals (20-80), who also got single goals form Ryan Wismer, Curtis Prymack, Jake Cummings, Dylan Muzzatti, Travis Campbell, Kasey Basile and Caleb Paquette.
