New fitness craze has finally made its way here

Try saying “Namaste” with a mouthful of bubbly.

Beer Yoga, a new worldwide craze in fitness, is coming to Windsor. Local event organizer Blue Pin Social hosted a class at The Manchester Pub on Monday night.

Beer Yoga started as Bier Yoga in Germany. It’s marketed as a way to combine two of the world’s oldest ways to lift your spirits, figuratively and literally.

Since then, the idea has travelled the globe, and it’s finally made its way here.

Monday’s session was taught by Lauren Fleming of Breathe Pilates and Fitness Studio, and was followed by a chance to drink and mingle in yoga pants.

Fleming ’s class will differ slightly from other versions of Beer Yoga, which often integrates holding and drinking the beer into the positions.

“Having beer during a class might be too filling for some participants,” she said, “and it would be hard for them to get into the moves.”

There’s also the chance that things could get a little tipsy.

“Some of the moves are hard to balance, especially for beginners. And with liquids and glass, there’s the potential for some spills or breakage.”

Instead, the drinking will be integrated into the cool-down after the class.

The class was beginner-friendly and Fleming hopes the uniqueness of the experience will attract newcomers.

“It’s a great way to get new people involved in yoga who might otherwise not have tried it,” Fleming said.

Nick Russell is one of these beginners. Russell plays slow-pitch in a league with the City of Windsor, and he’s trying out some new workouts before the season starts.

“I may die tonight, but it’ll be fun,” Russell said prior to Monday ’s session. “And I’m a big craft beer fan.” Which brew should Russell pair with a relaxing session of yoga? “Maybe a Corona and lime,” Fleming laughs. “It reminds me of having a beer at the beach.”

Blue Pin Social says it hopes to host another class next month, after selling out Monday night.

The class costs $15 for the yoga instructions and a pint or bottle.
