Second-half comeback powers Stars to draw with division-leading Sigma FC

The Windsor TFC Stars rallied from a three-goal deficit to earn a point against West Divisionle­ading Sigma FC on Sunday in League1 Ontario men’s soccer action at the University of Windsor’s Alumni Field.

It was the first point conceded by Sigma FC in five games with the club having opened the season with four straight wins before the TFC Stars rallied for a 3-3 tie.

Sigma FC, which is based in the Greater Toronto Area, scored two breakaway goals in the first eight minutes of the game and extended the lead to 3-0 with another goal in the 59th minute.

Dredon Kelly got the TFC Stars on the board with a goal in the 66th minute. Stephen Ademolu made it a one-goal game in the 71st minute and Celso Carapau pulled Windsor (2-1-2) into a tie with a goal in the 87th minute against a Sigma FC club that had conceded just four goals in its first four games.

JAMIESON GOLF TOUR

The Jamieson Junior Golf Tour opened its 30th season of play on Saturday with the tour qualifier, which was played at Fox Glen Golf Course.

A total of 76 golfers teed up looking for a spot in the four divisions of competitio­n.

In the junior boys’ division, Curtis Hughes was the top qualifier. He shot an even-par 70, which included an eagle on the par-four 10th hole. Sophia Fallea topped the field in the junior girls’ division with a nine-over 79.

Brendan Seys and Nicholas Mihalo tied for the top spot in the college men’s division with five-over 75s. Katelin Lawson led the way in the collegiate women’s division with a five-over 75.

RAVENS STAY UNBEATEN

The Essex Ravens remained unbeaten in the Ontario Provincial Football League with a 30-29 win over the Niagara Spears on Saturday in the club’s home opener at the University of Windsor’s Alumni Field.

Kaine Stevenson had 35 yards on 10 carries, but two of those runs went for touchdowns for Essex (2-0-0).

Quarterbac­k Mike Beal threw for 158 yards and also had a touchdown run while defensive lineman Christian Fecteau scooped up a fumble and took it in for another Essex major. Beal also had three converts while Roberto Mill had three punts that went for singles against the Spears (1-1-0).

CLIPPERS DOWN NIAGARA

Chase Kavanaugh scored four goals and finished with 10 points as the Windsor Clippers beat the Niagara Thunderhaw­ks 16-13 on Saturday in Ontario Lacrosse Associatio­n junior B action at Forest Glade Arena.

Dylan Riley added three goals for the Clippers (8-3-1) while Noah Bushnell and James Morgan each picked up a pair of goals. Singles went to Jake Rosa, Brendon Wallace, Luke Cappetto, Blain Wallace and Andrew Garant, who also had six assists. Joel Evans picked up the win in net with 30 saves against the Thunderhaw­ks (4-7-0).

BISHOP SIXTH IN 800M

Two-time Canadian Olympian and Windsor Lancers product Melissa Bishop got her outdoor track and field season going on Saturday.

In a race that featured all three medal winners from last year’s Olympic women’s 800 metres, Bishop finished sixth in a time of 1:59.52 at the Prefontain­e Classic track and field meet in Eugene, Ore.
