Did you know that strawberries aren’t actually berries?

Botanically speaking, they’re considered aggregate-accessory fruits. But more importantly — they’re the star attractions of the annual LaSalle Strawberry Festival, which happens this Thursday to Sunday.

“I did not know that (about strawberries). Interesting tidbit,” said Patti Funaro, the Town of LaSalle’s interim director of recreation and culture.

“I do like strawberries. They’re sweet and delicious.”

Now in its 30th year, the summer event will fill Gil Maure Park (1201 Front Rd.) with four days of fun.

On Wednesday evening, volunteers crammed the LaSalle Fire Hall to wash and prepare two tons of fresh strawberries — courtesy of Raymont’s Berries — for snacking enjoyment during the festival.

Thursday is the opening night of the carnival rides brought to the park by Robertson Amusements. There will be a special Thursday fare of $2 per ride.

Climb aboard the Avalanche, the Ali Baba, the Remix 2, Starship 3000, the Teacup Ride, or other machines for just a toonie.

Don’t miss the fireworks display, happening Friday at 10 p.m.

And don’t forget the Strawberry Parade, happening on Saturday morning along Front Road from the Turkey Creek bridge to Sacred Heart Drive.

The parade will begin 10 a.m. That portion of Front Road will be closed to traffic for the duration of the parade.

Funaro said this year’s parade will feature some fresh elements, including new bands, new floats, a Canada 150 theme — “and an all-new Captain Strawberry this year!”

Sunday concludes the event with family activities including a fishing derby at 7 a.m., strawberry planting at 10 a.m., and a strawberryeating contest at 2:30 p.m.
