Holy Names students earn 11 athletic scholarships

- KELLY STEELE

Soccer phenom Gianni Ferri was one of 11 students at Holy Names High School recognized at a ceremony Tuesday for earning postsecondary athletic scholarships.

“They’ve made a lot of sacrifices along the way,” said vice-principal Jim Kittl. “Balancing the student athlete phenomenon is huge because not only do you have to be a top athlete, but your academic average needs to be up there.”

Tiarra Davis is excited to be heading to Coastal Carolina University, an NCAA Division 1 school, to play basketball. She was recruited by other schools but chose Carolina because she felt like they were “willing to invest in me and help me grow as a player.”

Her parents are happy for her but also sad she is leaving home to pursue her schooling and basketball dreams, she said.

“My younger siblings are in sports too, so I hope I’m leading them by example,” she said. “Hopefully they end up getting into a Division 1 scholarship as well.”

The other scholarship recipients honoured were:

Jade Samping for soccer at University of Windsor

Juan Jaramillo for soccer at Lawrence Technological University, NAIA

Zach Herzog for football at Hillsdale College, NCAA Division 2

Nicholas Mihalo for golf at Robert Morris University, NCAA Division 1

Brendan Simone for cross country and track and field at University of Windsor

Stephanie Turner for soccer at University of Windsor

Dylan Mackenzie for football at University of Windsor

Chase Boycott for football at Western University

Adam Cesare for soccer at McMaster University
