Studentath­letes set themselves apart

The area’s top two high school track and field programs also dominated the all-star selections.

The Sandwich Sabres, who won the AA championsh­ip and finished with the most points by any area high school team, placed three athletes on the WECSSAA track and field all-star team in Tyler Jones, Jasmine Scott-Kilgo and Karlie Moore.

The Massey Mustangs, who captured the AAA championsh­ips, also placed three athletes on the all-star team in Chloe Walker, Noah Costa and Samantha Marchenkow­sky.

Rounding out the all-star team is the Herman Green Griffins’ Taneidra Cain, the Holy Names Knights’ Seth Kwasnicki and the Vista Academy Vortex’s Gage Marshall.

TYLER JONES

Division: Senior boys School: Sandwich Sabres Grade: 12 Age: 18 Highlights: Captured the 1,500 metres in 4:06.55, the 2,000-metre steeplecha­se in 6:09.99 and the 3,000 metres in 8:55.92. Future: St. Clair College.

TANEIDRA CAIN

Division: Senior girls School: Herman Green Griffins Grade: 11 Age: 16 Highlights: Won 400-metre hurdles in 1:05.97 and the 400 metres in 57.57 while finishing third in the 200 metres in 27.32. Also ran on Herman’s recordsett­ing 4x100-metre relay team and 4x400-metre relay team. Future: Returning to Herman.

JASMINE SCOTT-KILGO

Division: Senior girls School: Sandwich Sabres Grade: 11 Age: 16 Highlights: Would have set new records in winning the 100-metre hurdles in 14.56 and the long jump with a leap of 5.64 metres, but both were wind-aided. Finished third in 100 metres in 13.00. Future: Returning to Sandwich.

CHLOE WALKER

Division: Senior girls School: Massey Mustangs Grade: 11 Age: 16

Highlights: Set a new WECSSAA record in the 1,500-metre steeplecha­se in 5:15.71. Finished second in the 1,500 metres in 4:54.41 and the 3,000 metres in 10:28.90.

Future: Returning to Massey.

NOAH COSTA

Division: Junior boys School: Massey Mustangs Grade: 10 Age: 16 Highlights: Won the 800 metres in 2:00.46 and the 1,500 metres in 4:08.32 while finishing second in the 3,000 metres in 9:29.60. Future: Returning to Massey.

KARLIE MOORE

Division: Junior girls School: Sandwich Sabres Grade: 10 Age: 15

Highlights: Sent a new WECSSAA record in winning the 300-metre hurdles in 44.39, while also winning the 80-metres hurdles in 12.05 and the 200 metres in 26.80. Future: Returning to Sandwich.

SETH KWASNICKI

Division: Midget boys School: Holy Names Knights Grade: 9 Age: 14 Highlights: Won the 800 metres in 2:08.05, the 1,500 metres in 4:24.57 and the 3,000 metres in 9:33.80. Future: Returning to Holy Names.

GAGE MARSHALL

Division: Midget boys School: Vista Academy Vortex Grade: 9 Age: 14 Highlights: Won the 100 metres in 11.92, the 200 metres in 24.01 and the 400 metres in 53.09. Future: Returning to Vista Academy.

SAMANTHA MARCHENKOW­SKY

Division: Midget girls School: Massey Mustangs Grade: 9 Age: 14 Highlights: Won the 800 metres in 2:35.90, the 1,500 metres in 5:17.56 and the 3,000 metres in 11:47.29. Future: Returning to Massey.
