Cyclists a hazard on sidewalks

-

Please do not add more bicycles to the sidewalk. Besides being illegal, it can be unsafe for pedestrians.

We are dealing with bicycles approaching us from both directions, motorized wheelchairs, people pushing strollers or carriages (these groups usually share the sidewalk), bicycles with grocery bags on each handlebar and e-bikes.

I realize that it is unsafe for bicycles on the road but putting them on the sidewalk is not the answer.

Bicycles can suddenly appear beside you and you are grateful that you had not moved a quarter of an inch or you would have been hit. But worse are the bikes that pass by pedalling at top speed.

The hair on your arms stands up realizing how close you came to being seriously injured.

A senior told me about the bruise she received on her arm when a cyclist rode too close to her. Another told me about the sore hip she suffered when she was injured by a cyclist.

I was scolded by a man riding his bike. That was my first indication that there was someone behind me. He was angry because I had stopped and walked to the curb to see if the bus was coming.

I don’t mind getting off the sidewalk for anyone except for the cyclist who refuses to share the sidewalk. In the interest of public safety, we should all obey the rules and show respect and consideration for one another.

Thank you to the many who share the sidewalk. Lorraine Cousineau, Windsor
