Bruins, Senators backup goalies have better stats

- DON BRENNAN

FIVE KEYS

BETWEEN THE PIPES: Because the break doesn’t end until Wednesday, neither team has named its starting goalie. Both could make a case for going with their backups in this one. Regular season career numbers vs. Bruins for Craig Anderson are 12-110 with .909 save percentage and 2.96 GAA. New Englander Mike Condon is 4-2-2, .914, 2.28 vs. the team he grew up cheering. Tuukka Rask vs. Senators is 8-7-4, .921, 2.34, while backup Anton Khudobin has dominated Senators (5-0-1, .948, 1.81).

LINEUP QUESTION MARKS: After Saturday’s game, the Senators reassigned Ben Harpur, Chris DiDomenico, Andreas Englund and Danny Taylor to Belleville. They’ll have to make some recalls if any of Anderson (illness), Dion Phaneuf (family) and Bobby Ryan (finger) are unable to go to Boston. Biggest question mark is Ryan, who had a strong playoff against B’s last spring and was playing well before the recent injury that has kept him out of one game so far.

SECOND PERIOD WOES: The middle 20-minute segment has been the most troublesome for the Senators, as they’ve been outscored 4227. They’ve been outscored 39-35 in the third and 3-1 in overtime, while owning a 28-25 advantage in first period goals.

MAN IN A BOX: The Senators have taken 284 PIMs, for an average of 8.4 that is 10th fewest in the league, while the Bruins have averaged 10.7 PIMs for fourth highest. Senators are 3-for-9 on the PP in last three games while their PK is 11-for-12 it the last five. The Bruins PP is 1-for7 in last three games and they are 6-for-6 on the PK in the last three.

TAKING THEIR SHOTS: Guy Boucher is quick to mention the numbers on the shots clock when his team comes out on top, but they would seem to be irrelevant to the Bruins. Boston is 10-3-2 when outshot by opponents and 9-6-2 when leading on the shots clock.
