Port authority’s community outreach honoured
The Windsor Port Authority has received a North American honour in recognition of its local community outreach.
The Association of American Port Authorities presented the local authority the award of merit in the communication category for its efforts on the city’s west end in Olde Sandwich Towne.
The award was presented several weeks ago at the AAPA’s annual conference in Long Beach, Calif.
“This is a significant achievement for Windsor, considering we were judged alongside major ports such as New York, Vancouver and Long Beach,” said George Sandala, chairman of the port authority’s board. “This award reflects the outstanding work by the Windsor Port Authority staff .... It’s nice to see their hard work and dedication suitably rewarded.”
Several years ago, the port authority relocated from its downtown office to a new home close to the riverfront on Sandwich Street.
The port authority also helped oversee the relocation of HMCS Hunter to a new riverfront home.
It has since launched several initiatives that include fish habitat improvements, creating an outdoor museum on adjacent property, plus many financial donations that include the Sandwich Towne festival, Brock/Tecumseh statue, St. John’s Church food bank, Sandwich Teen Action Group and community cleanup initiatives.
