Gaels bounce host Clippers in AAA hoops quarter-final

The Kennedy Clippers’ quest for a medal came to an end Tuesday in quarter-final play at the OFSAA boys’ AAA basketball championsh­ip.

The No. 3-seeded Clippers, who are hosting the tournament, fell 55-43 to the No. 6-ranked Hamilton Cathedral Gaels in quarterfin­al play.

Earlier in the day, Kennedy advanced to the quarter-finals with a 53-48 win over No. 14 Orillia with point guard Marquise LaraCaston leading the offence with 15 points.

ROYALS BOW OUT

The No. 7-ranked Lajeunesse Royals bowed out of the OFSAA boys’ A basketball championsh­ip Tuesday in Cornwall.

The Royals fell behind by 11 points after the first quarter and lost 56-40 to No. 2-ranked Ottawa Notre Dame in quarter-final play. Andreas McBounds led the Royals with 15 points.

The Royals advanced to the quarter-finals with a 65-61 win over No. 10 Kitchener Rockway Mennonite. McBounds had 26 points to pace the Lajeunesse offence.

PURPLE RAIDERS BOUNCED

The No. 12-seeded Assumption Purple Raiders were ousted from medal competitio­n at the OFSAA boys’ AA basketball championsh­ip in Pembroke. Assumption took a six-point lead after the first quarter, but eventually fell 53-39 to No. 5-ranked London Mother Teresa Tuesday. Ali Al Abdulresoo­l led the Purple Raiders with 17 points

REBELS DROP HEARTBREAK­ER

After back-to-back silver medals, the Riverside Rebels are out of the medal hunt at this year’s OFSAA girls’ AA volleyball championsh­ip in Mississaug­a.

The No. 4 Rebels dropped a heartbreak­ing five-set match to No. 5 St. Catharines Eden in quarter-final play Tuesday. Eden took the match 3-2 by scores of 25-20, 13-25, 25-21, 22-25 and 19-17. Riverside won its final match of pool play to finish in first place earlier Tuesday with a 2-0 win over No. 10 Waterloo St. David. Riverside took the match by scores of 25-17 and 25-19 with Caylee Parker providing 14 kills and nine service aces.

SAINTS FAIL TO ADVANCE

The St. Anne Saints’ medal hopes came to an end as the club failed to advance to the quarter-finals from its pool at the OFSAA girls’ AAA volleyball championsh­ip in London.

No. 17 St. Anne closed out pool play Tuesday with a 2-0 loss to No. 7 Markham Father McGivney by scores of 25-18 and 25-13.

THREE-PEAT FOR ST. ANNE

The St. Anne Saints captured their third straight SWOSSAA boys’ AAA hockey championsh­ip Tuesday.

The Saints beat Sarnia St. Patrick 5-2 at Tecumseh Arena. John Ulicny scored twice for the Saints with Ryan Gagner, Neil Vorshuk and Brandon Kinette adding single goals for the Saints, who advance to OFSAA in St. Catharines from March 21 to 23.

NOBLES FALL IN OT

The Belle River Nobles have a little more work to do if the club hopes to defend its OFSAA title. The Nobles fell 3-2 in triple overtime Tuesday in the SWOSSAA boys’ A/AA championsh­ip to the Lambton Central Lancers. Belle River watched a pair of one-goal leads slip away with the Lancers taking the game in threeon-three play. Trevor Larue and Eric Larue scored for the Nobles, who got outstandin­g goaltendin­g from Luka Dobrich. Because Belle River won last year’s OFSAA title, two SWOSSAA teams will go to OFSAA. The Nobles will host the Lambton-Kent Cardinals Thursday for that second spot.

MUSTANGS SWEEP CURLING

The Massey Mustangs swept the SWOSSAA curling championsh­ip Tuesday.

The Massey boys’ team beat North Lambton 9-8 in an extra end to take the title while the Mustangs girls’ team beat Belle River 9-4 for the title.

Both teams advance to OFSAA, which is March 20-25 in Fort Frances.

FOUR LANCERS HONOURED

Four members of the University of Windsor Lancers men’s volleyball team were recognized Tuesday by the OUA.

John Moate and Pierce Johnson, who both play the left side, were named West Division firstteam all-stars, while St. Anne high school product Brad Geymi, who plays the right side, was named a second-team all-star. Setter Anthony DeGirolamo was named to the West Division all-rookie team.
